National Heart Foundation Travel Grants

The National Heart Foundation (NHF) offers Travel Grants to junior researchers working in the area of cardiovascular disease or related areas. Travel Grants are open to Australian citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must be based in Australia. Researchers may only receive one travel grant per year and up to two travel grants during their pre and postdoctoral training. No more than $2,000 can be requested. Travel Grant funding will be restricted to the following:

  • Students studying for higher degrees (PhD, Masters etc.) and junior Postdoctoral Fellows (no more than 5 years postdoctoral)
  • Travel Grants will only be awarded to those travelling overseas to present their cardiovascular research at a conference
  • Postdoctoral appointees travelling to take up an overseas position
  • Indigenous Health Researchers wishing to present their cardiovascular diseaseresearch at an appropriate conference in Australia are also eligible for a Travel Grant award
  • Current NHF Fellows and Scholars may apply for Travel Grants to supplementtheir current travel allowance
  • All applications submitted in a round will be considered competitively and awards will be offered by rank based on merit

All NHF Travel Grant applications must be submitted via the Research Office.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Travel Grant Program
Closing dates for 2010 are

Young Scientist Research Travel Grants – JDRF invites applications from young researchers for grants of up to $2,500 to allow travel to research institutions or scientific meetings, for the purpose of furthering the researcher’s expertise in the study of Type 1 diabetes. Eligible candidates will be medical, science or allied health graduates who are undertaking Type 1 diabetes research in the early stage of their career (ie PhD students or not more than 5 years postdoctoral). The scientific meeting/research visit planned by the applicant must focus on one of JDRF's research goals: to restore normal blood glucose levels; to prevent and reverse complications; to prevent Type 1 diabetes.

Allied Health and Nursing Travel Grants – JDRF invites applications from young allied health professionals (nurses, dieticians, psychologists, social workers, podiatrists, exercise physiologists, occupational therapists and pharmacists) for grants of up to $2,000 to allow travel for the purpose of presenting their research relevant to Type 1 diabetes. Eligible candidates will be allied health or nurse professionals undertaking research impacting on the lives of people with Type 1 diabetes and their carers and families; or allied health or nursing students, enrolled in a post graduate research program, whose research will impact on the lives of people with Type 1 diabetes and their carers and families.

Note: JDRF will not accept applications for meetings that have occurred or will occur before grants are awarded unless otherwise agreed.

Applicants must also be: Australian citizens, permanent residents currently residing in Australia or temporary residents holding JDRF research awards who are currently working at an Australian institution.

CASS Foundation Travel Grants
Closing dates for 2010 are

Synopsis: The CASS Foundation Limited is a private philanthropic foundation created to support and promote the advancement of education, science and medicine, and research in those fields. Travel Grants are offered to further the career opportunities of Australian postdoctoral early career researchers.

Eligibility: Postdoctoral early career researchers are defined as being generally within seven or eight years of the start of a research career. The travel grants are available to assist attendance at international conferences or other approved activities conducted outside Australia. The applicant is expected to present new research as a platform presentation or as a poster where the applicant is first author. The grants are not available for travel to attend conferences being held in Australia. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents and must reside continuously in Australia during the period between the date of applying for a CASS Travel Grant and the scheduled date of departure. The conference must not commence earlier than two months after the closing date for applications nor later than nine months after the closing date for applications. Travel must be completed within 90 days of departure from Australia.

Value: Up to $6,000 per grant

Ian Potter Foundation Travel & Conference Grants
Closing dates for 2010 are

Synopsis: The Ian Potter Foundation provides small travel grants to young staff members with at least 3 years tenure to attend overseas conferences, to pursue their research, to have the opportunity to gain further experience and to meet their peers in the international scene.

Value: An unconditional financial commitment from the institute (of up to $5000) towards the project must be confirmed before the application is submitted (support must be in addition to any salary stipend that will be paid during the travel undertaken). A letter of reference from the applicants Head of Department confirming the sum granted to the applicant for their travel must be attached to the application.

Eligibility: The Foundation does not provide funds for domestic travel; travel grants for undergraduate, masters or doctoral students; or retrospective grants for travel already undertaken in part or in whole. Applications must be received at least 3 months prior to the intended departure date.

Application: A budget for the project, the dates of travel, destination and a CV of the applicant must be attached to the application. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: The Travel Grant Guidelines state that the applicants intended departure date should be no less than three months from the closing date.
