The ARC supports 'fundamental' research only and does not fund research that could be classified as medical. If it is unclear whether the proposed research fits within the domain of the ARC or the NHMRC, an Eligibility Ruling Request needs to be submitted before 16 January 2009. Details of funded Discovery Projects from the 2009 round (and previous years) are available on the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/dp/dp_outcomes.htm. All application details, including the funding rules, are available via http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/dp/dp_default.htm. Aside from regular Discovery Projects, other categories of Discovery Projects that may be of interest are Australian Postdoctoral Fellowships (APDs) and Queen Elizabeth II Fellowships (QEIIs). These may be applied for directly by a candidate with a PhD awarded on or after 4 March 2006 (APD) or PhD awarded on or after 4 March 2001 (QEII) - see * below regarding submission. On a regular Discovery Projects application, a CI may apply for the salary of a postdoc named on the application. Universities are the only institutions authorised to administer ARC funding (with the exception of APDs and QEIIs - see * below), so applications should be submitted via the Monash Research Office (assuming the adjunct appointment is with Monash). Monash's internal closing date is 4 February 2009 (ARC closing date: 4 March 2009). The staff of the Monash Research Office have indicated that in order for applications to receive a full administrative review prior to submission, this closing date should be adhered to. However, they will still submit an application received after this date. Support resources (including application tips) are available on the Monash Research Office website at link to be advised. It is necessary to apply for a Grant Application Management System (GAMS) ID number to access the online funding application form. This is done via a short form available via the above link. If you have any queries about applying for a regular Discovery Projects grant, e-mail the Monash Research Office at arc@adm.monash.edu.au or call Helen Papaefthimiou 9905 9895. Also, please inform Heather Gallichio if you intend to apply and send her a copy of your application for Alfred & Baker IDI Research Office records. * APD and QEII applications should be submitted via the Alfred & Baker IDI Research Office, which is permitted to administer these as they are regarded as 'portable' awards. The Alfred & Baker IDI Research Office internal closing date is 25 February 2009. For a GAMS ID number, please contact Heather Gallichio.
