NHMRC – Postdoctoral Fellowships and Postgraduate Scholarships

- Applications for the 2007 funding of Postdoctoral Fellowships and Postgraduate Scholarships are now open.
Details are available on the NHMRC website at http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/fellows/apply/granttype/training/index.htm (fellowships) http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/fellows/apply/granttype/scholars/index.htm (scholarships)

- Scholarship applicants with any eligibility issue should seek a ruling from the Training Awards Committee before 7 July 2006

- There are several changes in regard to Postdoctoral Fellowships
For all potential applicants who have any doubts about eligibility, it is mandatory that you seek the approval of the Training Awards Committee to lodge an application. The two key issues are where an Australian-based Fellowship applicant does not intend to move institution, and where the applicant has had the PhD approved before 30 June 2004. In the case of Howard Florey Centenary Fellowships, the PhD should have been awarded after 1 July 2001 and before 30 June 2004. However, any other eligibility issue will also require the Training Awards Committee's approval. The fully justified request should be sent to the Training Awards mailbox [training.awards@health.gov.au] before 9 June 2006.

- Applications for Overseas, Australian-based and ATSI Fellowships have been combined into a common form
The format of this form is slightly different than last year, but essentially the same data is captured.

- For all Fellowship and Scholarship applicants, the NHMRC has emphasised that the Lay Description must be truly understandable to a non-scientist
These descriptions are used in media releases, and in recommendations to the Minister for Health, and it is counter-productive if they cannot be understood by a lay person.

- There is an error in the Fellowship Funding Rules
The 4th dot point of p.6 should read "at 30 June 2006, ...." rather than "...30 June 2005...". This will be corrected.

- Internal Deadlines
Postdoctoral Fellowships: 30 June
Postgraduate Scholarships: 28 July
