The Nursing Service at The Alfred receives a number of requests from nurses wishing to undertake research, including those undertaking postgraduate studies. In order to facilitate this process, we have formed a Nursing Research and Access Committee (NR&AC) which meets monthly [meeting dates] to provide a reference point for potential applicants. All research proposals must be submitted for approval to The Alfred Ethics Committee, which meets monthly.

It is essential that nursing applications are processed via the Nursing Research and Access Committee prior to submission to the Ethics Committee. Please find outlined below some guidelines to assist researchers.

The recommended process is as follows:

  • In order to determine the feasibility of undertaking this research at The Alfred the researchers are requested to contact the Executive Officer of the NR&AC prior to submitting their research applications to The Alfred Ethics Committee;

  • Advice will be provided to the researcher about the content, process and timelines required for the application;

  • Applications are to be submitted to the Secretary of the NR&AC by 9am Thursday prior to the NR&AC meeting [meeting dates] in order to provide feedback regarding suggested changes before the initial submission to The Alfred Ethics Committee.

Resources to conduct research
Any projects involving nursing resources must be considered by the NR&AC before submission to the Ethics Committee. Research activities may include clinical procedures, data collection, distribution of questionnaires, answering questionnaires or involvement in interviews or focus groups, research-related contact with patients and/or their families.

Nursing Research & Access Committee Meetings
One copy of the ethics application is to be forwarded to Helena Beck by e-mail by 9am on the Thursday prior to the NR&AC meeting. The NR&AC will review the application and provide comments or suggested changes prior to the initial submission to the Ethics Committee.
