Fees for independent expert review

Typically independent expert reviews are required for research that involves unknown or very high risk to participants, such as new procedures, devices or drugs with known safety issues or an unknown safety profile as in first-in-man studies.

Independent review processes impose significantly increased costs, responsibilities and administrative load on the Ethics Committee and the secretariat. Therefore, from the 1st September 2007, additional fees will be levied for ethics applications requiring such review.

The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) has reiterated that ethics committees should seek expert opinion when required to help with their reviews. The reviewers are subject to the same rules of confidentiality as are ethics committee members.

The fee will be $4,400 (including GST) and will be charged whether or not the project is approved by the Ethics Committee.

The fee will not apply to studies initiated by AMREP partner researchers where there is no commercial sponsorship.
