The Alfred Research & Ethics Unit

Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Eligibility

For staff members who are graduates in Medicine, Science, Nursing or Allied Health.

The proposed research must take place within The Alfred campus, with supervision or co-supervision by a senior staff member of The Alfred hospital.

To be eligible for an Alfred Research Trusts Postgraduate Research Scholarship it is mandatory to apply for an NHMRC Postgraduate Research Scholarship. Applicants should also apply for funding from other appropriate external funding bodies, such as the Heart Foundation.

A scholarship may be awarded to an applicant whose ranking is just below the cut-off point to receive NHMRC funding.

Amount

The annual stipends are set at NHMRC levels for Postgraduate Medical Research Scholars and for Biomedical Research Scholars.

Tenure

Scholarships are initially awarded for one year, but subject to satisfactory progress, may be renewed. The maximum period of the award will be three years if initial postgraduate degree enrolment is concurrent with commencement of the Scholarship. It is expected that recipients of Alfred Trusts scholarships will continue to apply for NHMRC funding.

Application forms

The NHMRC application form for Postgraduate Research Scholarships is to be used. The form and instructions are available from http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/fellows/apply/granttype/scholars/

Applications

One double-sided hard copy of your completed NHMRC application should be submitted to Liana Friedman, Alfred & Baker IDI Research Office, by 1 August 2008.
